10 tips from an expert for National Parks Week

April 19-27 is National Parks Week. Radford West, experienced climber and author of new book On Mountaineering, offers up 10 great tips for making the most of your trip.

  • Stay in an R.V. at the park’s campgrounds and make the experience also be about the campfire, roasting marshmallows and telling stories in the flickering shadows at night. Folding camp chairs make an outdoor living room.
  • Choose a smaller R.V. that is easy to drive and back into a campsite. They also fit in the restaurants’ and attractions’ parking lots.
  • Avoid driving long stretches of “are we there yet?” by flying and renting the R.V. at a location near your destination park. Arrange to ship your personal gear ahead to be held for your arrival. Recommendation: Cruise America has 124 rental sites nationwide.
  • Plan and book ahead (especially for the big National Parks). Stop driving by 4:00pm to enjoy the remains of the day in the park.
  • Stop at a museum for a mid-day break. They have art to view while stretching the legs, clean bathrooms and usually good cafeteria food. Recommendation: The Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody Wyoming on the way to Yellowstone’s eastern portal,
  • Pick a destination park where there is enough to do to stay a week or more. Recommendation: Watchman Campground in Zion National Park, Utah.
  • Bring games and books for those rainy days. Few parks have WIFI for our devices. Also bring your own music, as the radio selections may not be to your taste.
  • Stay at an occasional hotel for a change. Recommendation: The Mirage in Las Vegas has an oversized parking facility for the R.V.
  • Many of the State parks have better campgrounds than the National Parks. Recommendation: Blue Bell campground, Custer State Park, South Dakota.
  •  Park Rangers are a font of information about trails, the geology and fauna of the park as well as the wildlife. In season, regular Ranger talks are available.
